Sacramento authorities are investigating a shooting incident that occurred late Saturday at the Howe Community Park area as authorities were breaking up a large unauthorized gathering of a crowd of several hundred.
What Led to the Shooting
Deputies first arrived at Howe Park at about half past six in the evening after being notified of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Not long after, another report was received concerning a possible fight happening at the location.
A law enforcement helicopter conducted an aerial sweep but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Nevertheless, it was evident that a crowd of several hundred had come together at the location without official sanction.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies set about removing people from the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers directing the crowd to go home. About 15 minutes were provided for individuals to vacate.
Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition echoed through the night. The barrage of gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Officers immediately began finding those who had been shot.
Those Who Were Hit
Altogether, four gunshot victims were discovered with shooting injuries. The four individuals — consisting of one woman and three men all believed to be in their 20s — were airlifted or driven to local Sacramento hospitals. Doctors and nurses indicated that two victims were in serious condition, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. In a positive development, all four were expected to survive.
Sacramento fire crews also responded and aided in treating shooting victims on location.
Physical Evidence
The center of the incident was believed to have occurred adjacent to Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives recovered further ballistic evidence in the form of shell casings on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were discovered in the iron fence near the Home Depot. These discoveries showed that a second shooter had been aiming south from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot building and parking lot.
